Thermal imaging, known as thermography, is accomplished with a special camera that sees the infrared part of the spectrum where human vision cannot. All objects emit heat and the subtle variations and patterns are a useful diagnostic tool.
Energy waste in buildings, overheated mechanical and electrical components, and concealed water damage in structures can literally be "seen" by thermal imaging. Other applications include the location of hidden water pipes, concealed fire "hot spots", animal inflammation diagnosis, new construction structural analysis, HVAC blockages, and even search and rescue.
